The Light Bulb Moment

My name is Daniel DeBaun, CEO of DefenderShield. I’m a telecommunications engineer who founded DefenderShield in 2011 with my son Ryan.

It all started in 2010, when my sons came to visit my wife and me over the holidays. As many employees do nowadays, they were working remotely for their jobs, typing away on their laptops in their lap for hours at a time.

My wife said to my boys,

“That can’t be good for you! I want grandchildren one day!”

What she said immediately caught my attention.

Now, my wife had no science or medical background, but her intuition told her that whatever “radiating stuff” that was coming from the bottom of the laptop probably wasn’t going to help her sons have children any time soon.

Investigating the Problem

From my engineering background at Bell Labs and AT&T, I knew that electrical equipment and electronic devices emit “low levels” of radiation called Electromagnetic Fields (EMFs). I also knew that this non-ionizing radiation was not thought of as harmful at the time, as it was “not powerful enough” to affect our cells.

However, it turns out that once I looked at all the scientific research, an extensive body of evidence was actually showing that these low-level emissions from laptops, cell phones, and other devices had negative biological effects on humans. Unfortunately, there was a lot more research than I thought there would be.

As an engineer, I know that certain materials and processes can block radiation emissions from electronics. So naturally, I figured a product had to exist that my sons could use to shield the radiation. I searched and searched online, but to my surprise, I could not find anything that completely blocked the radiation.

In fact, it didn’t seem like anyone really understood fully what the issue was or how to mitigate the problem.

From what I could find in a small set of existing products, they could only block about 75-85% of one type of radiation emission. As for the other products out there, almost everything had unsubstantiated claims or used some wacky gobbledygook explanations that had no basis in science.

That’s when I took it upon myself to create a solution. If nothing existed, I was going to fix that.

Creating a Solution

After a lot of trial and error, I was able to create a process to block all forms of EMF radiation emitted from the bottom of a laptop.

I began making shields for my sons and then for some friends and family in the basement of my home, which we called the DefenderPad Laptop Radiation & Heat Shield. Everyone who used the shields seemed to understand their shielding value.

With my son Ryan, we formally founded DefenderShield, in 2011. Since then, we have expanded our product lines to include EMF-shielding cases and accessories for cell phones and tablets, and have even developed EMF-free headphones and clothing.

It has been an amazing journey, and I am humbled and gratified to be able to help people protect themselves from EMF radiation emissions and live a healthier digital lifestyle.

The Problem with Today’s Technology

Engineer, Founder and Chairman of the Board

Daniel is an internationally recognized and influential expert in shielding electronic emissions and Electromagnetic Radiation (EMF) protection, with a particular focus on the effect of exposure from mobile devices such as laptops, tablets and cell phones. Daniel’s concern regarding the health impact of electronic radiation emissions grew from over 40 years of engineering experience in the telecommunications industry, where he held a variety of leadership and executive positions at Bell Labs, AT&T, SAIC and Telcordia.

Through the course of his career, Daniel has created requirements for large telecommunication systems, led technical divisions responsible for establishing industry standards and formed analysis adherence testing for next-generation digital transmission systems. Daniel also oversaw laboratories which analyzed electromagnetic radiation (EMF) interference, electrical signals and digital formats. He and the teams he led were looked upon as industry authorities.

Daniel is the inventor of DefenderShield®, the most effective EMF radiation protection technology for mobile devices ever developed. In addition to his work with DefenderShield®, Daniel is a highly regarded author, industry consultant, writer, and speaker as well as a frequent guest on podcasts and other platforms discussing EMF health issues.

Kylen is the Chief Executive Officer at DefenderShield, and is responsible for leading the strategic growth of the company. After growing up in Raleigh, NC, Kylen moved to Tallahassee, FL to complete her lifelong swimming career at Florida State University as the Women’s Swimming and Diving Team Captain. Kylen graduated with a B.S. in Marketing and Management and married her fellow teammate turned husband, Alan. She continued her education as a Seminole and went on to earn her Masters in Business Administration.

Upon finishing school, Kylen secured an executive operations management position with one of the largest International retailers in the world, where she spent the better part of a decade honing a wide skill set that allowed her to make an immediate impact at DefenderShield.

While pregnant with her first son, Kylen completed a 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training program at a prominent studio in Tampa, FL, where she met DefenderShield co-founder, Ryan DeBaun.

Kylen knew what a special opportunity it would be to join DefenderShield, the pioneers of a new industry in the digital wellness space. She began working with Ryan and Daniel DeBaun in 2017 and has been a key member of the company since then.

In her personal time (wait, do moms even have personal time?), Kylen enjoys being with family and friends, supporting her children’s athletic careers in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and soccer, traveling, eating delicious food, and enjoying the Florida sun and water.

She is passionate about sharing her perspective on parenting in a modern digital world so other parents gain knowledge to help their families live healthier digital lives.

Michelle is the COO at DefenderShield, and is responsible for overseeing and managing all daily operations, including marketing, logistics, shipping, product development, and customer service.

Michelle grew up playing volleyball in Palm Beach, Florida, before attending Elon University in North Carolina to play NCAA volleyball. She graduated with a BA in Journalism and minors in Health & Wellness Education and Business Administration.

From there she joined DefenderShield as the Marketing Manager, and became an integral part of DefenderShield’s fast-growing team. Her keen marketing mindset, intuitive analyzing, and smart decision-making has made her a valuable asset and collaborator, and has helped unite the organization across departments.

As a lifelong holistic health student and athlete, Michelle is Chief Operating Officer passionate about DefenderShield’s mission of increasing awareness of digital wellness.

Michelle enjoys playing volleyball when she can, biking, yoga, and traveling. She resides in St. Petersburg, Florida, with her husband, Zack, and a lot of half-dead plants.
