EMF Safety in Schools: Information for Parents

Children using iPads in school

As technology in education continues to advance at an increasing rate, more and more schools are beginning to incorporate technology into their students’ curriculum.

Google Chromebooks, as well as Apple iPads and other tablets, are being seen more and more in the classroom, with some schools even renting tablets to kids for homework purposes.

According to Futuresource, tech companies shipped more than 29 million mobile computers including laptops, tablets, and smartphones to U.S. schools in 2018.

While tech supporters will cite the many advantages associated with the incorporation of technology in education, such as a laptop or tablet’s ability to deliver cost effectiveness, ease of use, and of easy access to a broad spectrum of information, there is one major issue that far too many people are overlooking.

Every single electronic device, whether in your house or in your child’s school classroom, has some form of EMF (Electromagnetic Field) radiation emitting from it. Overexposure to EMF radiation is a potentially dangerous problem, especially for young, still-developing children.

How Can EMF Exposure Affect Your Child?

Extensive research shows that prolonged EMF exposure can cause irreversible damage to our DNA and cells. Furthermore, EMF radiation has also been shown to negatively impact our immune and nervous systems.

All these effects are even more apparent in children, since their watery tissues allow for more conduction of this radiation, allowing it to go deeper into vulnerable organs like the brain and the heart.

This means that in the short-term, EMFs can make you or your child experience symptoms such as…

  • Attention and Concentration issues
  • Insomnia and Sleep Disturbances
  • Stress
  • Fatigue
  • Anxiety and Depression
  • Burning Sensations on the Skin and in the Eyes
  • Rashes
  • Muscle Aches and Pains

And in more severe cases, EMFs have been linked to ADHD, Autism, Asthma, Obesity, leukemia in children, and even breast tumors.

What Can I Do To Make Sure My Kids Are Safe From EMFs?

One of the first things you should do is talk to your child about how they feel after using technology such as laptops and tablets for long periods of time. It shouldn’t matter whether or not this usage is at home or at school. Listen to see if they are experiencing any of the symptoms from above.

If they’re still too young to verbally discuss their symptoms, you can assess them yourself by simply monitoring their behavior for a short period of time before and after exposure to EMFs. If the symptoms are prevalent, you will be able to pick up on them, even though these signs can be small.

Many parents, when they begin to look for symptoms of EMF exposure, notice that after using an iPad for long periods of time their child will refuse to nap. While this might also be caused by the child’s exposure to high-energy blue light coming from the tablet screen, EMF radiation can mess with many hormones and neurotransmitters in the brain, such as melatonin.

Most importantly, you know your child best, which means you are the best advocate for their health and well-being.

EMFs can affect some people more than others so it’s possible that your child may not feel much of an effect. If you’re unsure it’s always better to at least take some precautions just to be on the safe side.

According to the website bodyecology, if you, your child, or someone in your family is suffering from possible EMF symptoms it’s important to understand that “minimizing or eliminating EMFs is even more important in these situations because if immunity is already low, EMFs can make it harder to recover.”

If EMFs Emit From Every Electronic Device, How Do You “Eliminate” Them?

Even in the most severe cases, most families would find that eliminating all EMF radiation exposure is hardly an option.

While some sources lean towards absolute “elimination” of EMFs, most experts in the field believe that the majority of the dangers of EMFs can be prevented through the minimization of EMF exposure.

In the life of the average individual, most will likely need a laptop to do some of their work, a cell phone to keep in touch with friends and loved ones, and maybe even a TV for entertainment purposes.

And when it comes to your child, even if you’ve eliminated most or all of the EMFs at home, they will likely be unable to avoid exposure while they’re attending school, especially as technology continues to be adapted to new curriculum.

At most children’s schools almost every teacher and administrator has some sort of electronic device. Each one of these computers is most likely hooked up to WiFi via routers (one of the biggest producers of EMFs) and they remain turned on the entire day while your child is there. There are also good odds that your child is using some sort of an electronic device, such as an iPad or Chromebook, to complete their work as assigned by their teacher.

Because of these reasons, cutting out EMFs entirely is not very plausible. But, if you are concerned that EMFs are affecting you or your child, you can begin by taking a proactive approach towards minimizing exposure to EMFs.

Start by cutting back on certain electronics in a manageable way and see how you and your child’s body reacts to it. Small changes in EMF exposure can make a big difference in the way one feels.

Sometimes when your body has felt a certain way for so long it becomes hard to remember how good you can feel. This is why even if you think that you are not experiencing any issues, you may just want to minimize EMF usage for a few days to see what happens. Experimentation with different EMF levels can never hurt. And when it comes to the safety of your children and loved ones, this type of experimentation is important.

While the big “answer” may not be simple, doing simple things each day to minimize exposure is important. Use devices as infrequently as possible, keep them away from you or turn them off when you aren’t using them, use wired headsets and speakers over Bluetooth options, and consider using EMF radiation shields on devices when you do have to use them. Try to get yourself and your child outside into nature as often as possible, to counteract the effects of EMF radiation and to teach your child that it is possible to have fun while offline and disconnected!
